Styrofoam plays a vital role in today’s economy. It’s a very flexible material, used in various things like cups and plates. Styrofoam is also commonly used as packing material. Packing Styrofoam is often made in lose form or as “peanuts”. We see these products on an almost daily basis. But did you know that Styrofoam still has other uses?

Builders and architects often use Styrofoam concrete forms because of the air pockets it has, making it a great insulator. The material can be used n roofs and slabs, working as light and durable panels that keep the elements from entering the interior. The great thing about Styrofoam is that it works as an insulator against both heat and cold. It even insulates noise! You might’ve noticed that there’s a lot of Styrofoam in theaters and recording studios.

The reason why Styrofoam isn’t really seen as a part of the building industry is because it’s rarely seen in household furniture and household fixtures. One use for the material in homes can be found in suspended ceilings that insulate homes from the elements and sound.

The Growth of Styrofoam

Styrofoam has permeated a number of industries over the years, as more and more people have discovered its versatility and convenience. But be warned, when used irresponsibly, Styrofoam can be harmful to the environment, as it is non biodegradable.
